Temple Mount
I provided a couple of links for anyone who is interested in reading more details about this. Even if you only skim the information, it will give you a better understanding of what you're looking at. Some believe that the location of the First and Second Temples is underneath the Dome of the Rock, which is a Muslim Shrine. Others have contended for alternate locations. I have included a picture of the exposed bedrock covered by a simple canopy, which is one of these proposed locations.

Before going to Jerusalem, I did not understand why there was a Muslim Shrine controlled by the Muslims today on Temple Mount, long after Israel again became a nation and could have regained complete control of this sacred site. Ronny explained that this was a political decision that was made out of a desire for peace. It was believed that this gesture of good will would result in a peaceful coexistence between the Muslims and the Jews. In hindsight, that has not proven a correct assumption and was probably an error in judgment. More of the history of this shrine is included in the Wikipedia links.
